DECC: Where Innovation Meets Legacy, Shaping Doha’s Global Stage

ES. With over 20 years in global trade fair leadership ranging from Zaragoza to Doha, what inspires your vision for DECC, and how are you adapting your strategic approach for Doha’s evolving event landscape?

Jose Vicente. Experience across major trade fairs from Zaragoza to Doha has shown how exhibitions serve as gateways to economic growth, cultural exchange, and innovation. At the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC), the vision is driven by this power to bring people, ideas, and industries together in ways that leave a legacy for the city and the wider region. Doha is positioning itself as a global hub that blends world-class infrastructure with a distinctive cultural identity. Within this context, DECC has a responsibility to act not only as a venue, but as a catalyst for business, tourism, and knowledge exchange.

This is an opportunity to continually raise standards. The strategy is built on adaptability: strengthening partnerships with international organizers and aligning events with global trends in sectors such as energy, technology, healthcare, and culture.

ES. As technology redefines event delivery, how is DECC incorporating digital innovations – such as smart venue management, ESG practices, or hybrid event formats- to deliver next-generation event experiences?

Jose Vicente. At DECC, we see technology and sustainability as central to the future of events, and we’re embedding these principles across our operations. On the digital side, we’ve moved exhibitor services such as manuals, order forms, and floorplans online, while also promoting paperless registration and e-ticketing to make the visitor journey seamless and efficient. From a smart venue management perspective, we’ve introduced zoned LED lighting, natural daylighting, and partial HVAC systems that reduce energy use while keeping comfort levels high. Recycling and waste segregation are built into every event, ensuring resources are managed responsibly.

Equally important is how our partners and organizers align with this vision. The Big 5 Construct Qatar organized NeXTfairs and DMG Events, for instance, eliminated single-use plastics, launched digital catalogues, and prioritized reusable stand materials. Cityscape Qatar organized by Informa Markets adopted modular, reusable stand solutions, sustainable carpeting, and completely paperless registration processes. Finally, DECC is working with grade A waste management partners to adopt a “zero waste to landfill” approach, implementing comprehensive recycling and composting programs that will divert our waste from landfills. Web Summit Qatar organized by Web Summit and Government Communications Office (GCO), produced more than 100 KG of compost from organic waste that has been distributed at the DECC Park.

These examples show how digital innovation and ESG practices come together at DECC to deliver not only world-class events, but ones that are environmentally responsible and future ready. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that every event hosted at DECC leaves a positive and lasting impact.

ES. Reflecting on DECC’s potential, what legacy do you hope to build for yourself, your team, and Doha’s future as a global event hub?

Jose Vicente. DECC’s ambition is to be recognized as a benchmark of excellence and a catalyst for Doha’s growth as a global events hub. The center is envisioned not only as a venue, but as a platform where industries, cultures, and ideas converge to create opportunities that extend far beyond the exhibition floor. The team’s role is central to this vision, fostering a culture of professionalism, innovation, and adaptability that strengthens every event we deliver and contributes to Qatar’s standing in the global event ecosystem. For Doha, the long-term goal is to build an enduring presence on the world stage, a city distinguished not only for hosting world-class events, but for delivering meaningful platforms that drive commerce, knowledge, and cultural exchange for generations to come.
